The Physical and Mental Dangers When someone begins drinking at an early age, they run the risk of increasing their chances of suffering from many of the dangerous effects that alcohol will have on their growth processes even later on in their lives. An alcoholic’s perception or world view is not the same as someone who does not drink. They become confused easily and tend to combine their surroundings based on their emotions. Once the alcohol is consumed, it enters the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine, then it travels to the brain. The human brain is not fully mature until after the age of 25 and underage drinking can possibly disrupt brain structuring and functioning. Then they are not able to pay attention, because their brain is slowing down. This can lead to aggression and a lack of self-contro l even later on into adulthood. The hypothalamus is the area of the brain that controls the release of hormones. It sends signals letting you know when you are hungry or thirsty. If the hypothalamus’ signals are blocked by alcohol, then the kidneys do not function properly causing loss of water and dehydration. This is what leads to what is called a hangover, or morning headache. Dizziness, loss of balance and erratic movements occur when alcohol reaches the cerebellum. Teenagers who are drunk may begin doing things that they wouldn’t normally do, such as dancing on tables, falling over other people or running into walls. They are doing damage to this area of the brain that could have been avoided if they had waited to drink. If the teen continues to drink, they may begin to lose control of their balance having the appearance of a drunk person even when they are sober. Students will probably have learned conditional forms during intermediate level courses, but may seldom make use of these forms in conversation. However, making conditional statements are an important part of fluency. This lesson focuses on helping students improve their recognition of the structure and use it more frequently in conversation. Lesson Aim: Improve recognition of the first and second conditional forms used in conditional statements, while inductively reviewing the structures. Activities: Reading a short prepared text with first and second conditional forms included, speaking and replying to student-generated conditional questions, writing and developing structurally correct questions using the first and second conditionals Level: Intermediate Outline: Ask students to imagine the following situation: Youve arrived home late at night and you find that the door is open to your apartment. What would you do? Young American Women face the pressure to stay thin more than anyone. This leads to the discussion of eating disorders, which are a common disorder arising from pressure to stay thin. â€Å"Eating disorders are serious life-threatening illnesses that are extremely complex coming from varieties of biological, physiological, and social factors (NEDA, n.d.)†. Eating disorders are a very serious and mentally debilitating disease. Early diagnosis is ideal in recovery. This diseases can be life threatening. It is imperative that treatment is found and given to the individual. Psychotherapy or psychological counseling seem to be the most responsive type of treatment but must be introduced at the patient’s own pace. Treatment can be received at many†¦show more content†¦A patient is psychiatrically unstable if symptoms from the disorder become worse and or suicidal thoughts and actions are present (NEDA, n.d.). â€Å"Partial hospital treatment is needed when the patient is medically stable but daily assessments of physiological functions are need and also the results of impaired function from the eating disorders are present† (NEDA, n.d.). This may include not having the proper social, educational, and or vocal skills needed in certain situations. Partial hospitalization programs last between 3 and 12 hours per day; however, this is based off of the severity of the patient’s condition (NEDA, n.d.). Other facilities provide additional care options that can correspond to the treatment plan. Support groups may help a patient to keep good mental health and may prevent relapse after the patient has been discharged. Residential care allows individuals to live in a facility with 24 hour care. Each patient has medical supervision around the clock. This type of treatment allows patients the setting that is needed only to focus on healing physically and psychologically (NEDA, n.d.). Anything the patient may need is found on site. When these stages have been achieved then either intensive outpatient or outpatient therapy is the next step. To begin this process the patient must be medically stable and no longer need monitoring.
