Right now Im at an airport, watching my Terrascopers from Mission 2016 bond as we await to board a plane to Houston, then to Las Vegas, then a bus to somewhere mountain-ey. (Look they did awesome things (including making this website) Im so proud of them!) Were going to see mines and things related to Mission 2016, which was focused on rare earth elements, to be brief (more info in website!^^) If you want to see awesome pictures of the American Southwest and read about what were doing on this trip, YOU SHOULD VISIT THIS BLOG. This past week was more intense than a monkey complaining about not getting grapes, like the other monkeys. I actually just got out of a thermo test, and now I get to ponder about it some more once I hear the jet engines whirlin. :) But for now, some people are sleeping (I really should join them), some work, some eat, most have laptops open including me. Conversations are everywhere. Two little girls are drinking from the biggest blue poweraid bottle available. Its cute. That reminds me. There are children outside of the college bubble. How and when did I grow up ? I once saw a toddler at an airport trip right into a stranger, and I laughed with everyone else that was watching because that was cute too. That was in December, only 2 hours after my last final. Except that day they had cancelled my flight because there was a storm coming in from the west. Not cute. Luckily, I had my passport, so they put me on a plane to Montreal the next morning, and the funny thing was that after almost getting to my gate, right before checking in, they told me that it was illegal to go to Canada without staying there for more than 4 hours, so they delayed my arrival time in Chicago yet again. Time couldnt go by any slower. I just wanted to go home! (Now that I think of it, NOW, time is going by too quickly. I havent even blogged about this whole December airplane trip. Or about August, but Ill get to that. Once I feed myself some food. Ill be back.) ~close laptop~ Just kidding I wasnt that hungry. Just got a smoothie instead because its tropical, unlike the weather. Hey at least it wasnt an expresso. Sabina 15 and I literally smelled our way to the food because we cant read signs apparently. Anyway, you should be proud of me, because I resisted getting Starbucks. In any case, right when I was beginning to think that Id never get home in time for Christmas (this happened on the 23rd), I met Joe (Grad Student) on my flight to Montreal, and soon enough time started to pass by a bit more quickly . I soon learned that Joe was a grad student in course 16 woot, woot! and also hailed from the Chicago area, and so we chatted about course 16 things on a plane. (Now that I think of it, my most intense conversations about my major have happened on an airplane how wonderfully fitting! ^_^) Once in Montreal, we got through cutsoms and had to wait for maybe four hours at the airport before our next flight. Joe and I stepped outside for a bit, just to claim that we indeed were on Canadian soil It was so windy, and my hair was such good friends with it, that Joe thought I resembled Syndrome from The Incredibles. xD     We had a lot of time to kill, and it was an airport, so… take pictures of model airplanes and learn about Montreal we did! (Joe even found a typo, can you spot it?) The montreal sign thing was from a display in the airport. I was looking for more proof that I actually went to Montreal. Believable, ay? .minus the fact that you could see a reflection                                                     3/26 Hello again. I slept a lot. And I’ve hiked a lot by now, tooâ€"I feel like a champ. Now we’re in California, and we’re passing through lots with super old stoves and antique shops somewhere near Mojave. It’s crazy-in the desert there’s a such thing as it feeling warm yet cold at the same time. So to finish my Canada story, after going through security again, Joe and I were waiting to board our plane to Chicago when he says, “I’m really glad we finally get to go home, but part of me wouldn’t mind staying in a hotel for the night, that’d be nice. If our flight gets delayed they’ll have to pay for it.” No more than 10 minutes later an announcement was made. Our flight was cancelled again. Just ours, though. All of the other flights to Chicago were fine. I wanted to start laughing at our luck, but people around us literally started crying. We later learned that our plane had a mechanical failure. So to a hotel we went! On the bus to the hotel, people were speaking French, et je pensait, “Bon c’est une opportunite pour pratiquer!” But all I did was smile because I was too excited that there were real French speakers to listen. Look what I found in the hotel! NITROGEN ICE CREAM (those of you coming to CPW, prepare!) And this lovely, quite situationally fitting poem on a mug. So Joe and I ate dinner, watched a basketball game, and eventually, finally, after persistently convincing security in Canada that we were not crazy, we made it home. I was a HAPPY child adult thing. I ate pozole almost every single day, was reunited with the young’uns, and played some dama China.     ^I GOT TO SEE MY NEPHEW!  Why is it that little kids can grow so quickly and Im still 50? :P OH MY… there are tons and tons of wind turbines out here look… is this what aliens look like?   Sorry. I need to gape at the window now. 3/30 or 3/31 depending on the time zone. Things I learned on the Terrascope trip Respect Geologists. And Geology. Always and forever. You cant take pictures that will ever completely capture a valley/mountain scene. Lucky Ana gets to go on trips with such amazing, talented freshmen, utfs, TAs, profs, people. Drink water. Unless the grand outdoors isnt a suitable enough bathroom for you. In that case, dont drink water, but dont die, too. OH MY GOD MASSIVE HOOVER DAM TURBINE GENERATORS3 Only go on trips to canyons and mountains with geologists. Its the best way. More info here. Basically our trip is over (all thats left is the plane ride home). Why do trips end so soon? August. Over the summer, I once missed a bus to Washington D.C. because I wanted to visit a friend I met through MITES.  I had just finished teaching for STEM, and had a week before I would go on to China. Rather than be homeless in Boston, it was time to pay Sukriti a visit. :P But like I said, I missed my 8am bus due to time mismanagement (will be a word today  is actually a word), so I would have to either wait until 12am for the next one or see if the bus at 12pm had any room. After hearing these options and sitting in south station pondering about them, I went up to the counter and asked for ANY OTHER OPTION. The other option was going to New York. The good thing was that there are busses leaving south station to NY every hour for relatively cheap. The bad thing was that I needed to navigate my way through NY to find another station entirely once I got there.  Sure, this is a relatively simple thing to do. If you have the internet. Once I got to New York, after blasting this song  over and over on the ride there, I prepared to find the new station. Usually when Im in these situations, walking around in a certain direction until I determine its either right or wrong works. I had like 3 hours until the bus left anyway. Thankfully, Starbucks gave me some internet, and at least now I had some sense of direction. (This is when I realized why having a data plan might be worth it.) So on my way I stopped and got like 10 postcards because they were on sale. Whenever I want an excuse to send a postcard to someone, I just tell them the story of how I got the postcard, and it ends up taking up most of the space to write anyway, plus an I miss you or something along those lines. Did I mention I was carrying a 15 lb bag with no wheels? (I should never buy a duffel bag without wheels.)  Also, the other station was three miles away. Also, if Im too cheap to get a data plan, by default I couldnt have gotten a cab, so I ruled that one out. I considered using a year-old metro card I had from NY, but I would without a doubt get lost on the subway, and no, no maybe Id come back to NY one day and actually need the card. -__-  I needed the exercise after a whole year of sitting down to do psets, right? Right? RIGHT? I felt like a champ when I got there. It was worth it. There was nice scenery. It wasnt raining or anything. But at some points Im sure people were wondering why I was hugging a bag and waddling like a penguin without stopping. There was a sense of, I have no idea what will happen, but lets take it as it comes. :) Part of me thinks  I definitely enjoy getting lost/ encountering challenges while travelling. If I were talking to you right now face to face, Id show you my biceps, 50% of which probably come from carrying my luggage in New York, oh that concrete jungle where dreams are made of. When I got to the station, all I had was my super broken-screened ipod to show that I had indeed bought a ticket from Boston to NY. I had to explain what happened, and that the counter people at South Station told me this was a legitimate course of action. Im pretty sure they let me on the bus 95% because of pity and 5% because of the determined, crazed, I-just-walked-3-miles-for-this look my face. After getting on the wrong train in DC and booking it before they closed the subway, I was able to be reunited with Sukriti since summer 2010. YAY (A shoutout to her and her folks for letting me stay and giving me food 3 and being awesome. Dhanybhad!!!) I had so much fun getting to know DC,  going to Old Town Alexandria, and the National Air and Space Museum! Blackbird. is. hot. and. space shuttle. (My birthday month :D) It also brings us to tomorrow in both Boston and Nevada. 3/31 Officially. If you can handle any more of my August here goesthey have hazlenut coffee here, so Im not stopping. On my birthday I was on a plane to China. Dont worry, I was spoiled by (Rebecca+ Jaya+Lealia +Rob) (15) Proof: (Thanks to all of you too!!!) Yes, that is an arch of balloons you see in the reflection on the window. XD     Shortly after this celebration, I hopped on a plane to LA, then to Beijing, then to Shenzhen a total of 23 hours traveling. (Interestingly, I did not get lost from Boston all the way to my final destination) Somewhere in between was my official birthday, so that was interesting. Why was I going to China? I was a mentor for the Service Leadership Program a 10 day program for high schoolers in the city of Shenzhen. They went through activities that focused on entrepreneurship, community service, communication, education, team building, and culture (since the Chinese education system may not focus on some these things at all). It was also meant as a program to help them practice their English. As of today I know one sole, lonely sentence in Chinese because the kids patiently taught me it (the way Id pronounce it:)  Wuo de John When bee knee how: I know how to speak Chinese better than you. : ??????????????? (Thank you google translate?) I felt like I grew so much with these kids, and I got to know awesome MIT undergrads as well. I also learned how to use chopsticks to the degree that I wont be ashamed to use them in public any longer. The trip was largely subsidized by the China Development Initiative at MIT. We were playing a game in which the last person to laugh was the winner: And here they are building bridges and helping me sport a moustache.   We grew pretty close in those 10 days the kids made these: (the one on the right is a drawing of me by one of the students!)     There was all kinds of beauty on that trip. I learned so much, and once again was surrounded by so much talent and spirit. Your gut feeling telling you that I got lost in China is right.  Ask Arthi 15 about it. We were able to get help without even knowing Chinese. What would a trip be without some forced exploration? Well, its pretty late here and Ive got a plane to catch in the morning. I hope Ive somewhat caught you up on what Ive been up to. (heh Yay...August) Im not going to lie, this is how life at MIT is. Im always trying to catch up with time. Students will probably have learned conditional forms during intermediate level courses, but may seldom make use of these forms in conversation. However, making conditional statements are an important part of fluency. This lesson focuses on helping students improve their recognition of the structure and use it more frequently in conversation. Lesson Aim: Improve recognition of the first and second conditional forms used in conditional statements, while inductively reviewing the structures. Activities: Reading a short prepared text with first and second conditional forms included, speaking and replying to student-generated conditional questions, writing and developing structurally correct questions using the first and second conditionals Level: Intermediate Outline: Ask students to imagine the following situation: Youve arrived home late at night and you find that the door is open to your apartment. Young American Women face the pressure to stay thin more than anyone. This leads to the discussion of eating disorders, which are a common disorder arising from pressure to stay thin. â€Å"Eating disorders are serious life-threatening illnesses that are extremely complex coming from varieties of biological, physiological, and social factors (NEDA, n.d.)†. Eating disorders are a very serious and mentally debilitating disease. Early diagnosis is ideal in recovery. This diseases can be life threatening. It is imperative that treatment is found and given to the individual. Psychotherapy or psychological counseling seem to be the most responsive type of treatment but must be introduced at the patient’s own pace. Treatment can be received at many†¦show more content†¦A patient is psychiatrically unstable if symptoms from the disorder become worse and or suicidal thoughts and actions are present (NEDA, n.d.). â€Å"Partial hospital treatment is needed when the patient is medically stable but daily assessments of physiological functions are need and also the results of impaired function from the eating disorders are present† (NEDA, n.d.). This may include not having the proper social, educational, and or vocal skills needed in certain situations. Partial hospitalization programs last between 3 and 12 hours per day; however, this is based off of the severity of the patient’s condition (NEDA, n.d.). Other facilities provide additional care options that can correspond to the treatment plan. Support groups may help a patient to keep good mental health and may prevent relapse after the patient has been discharged. Residential care allows individuals to live in a facility with 24 hour care. Each patient has medical supervision around the clock. This type of treatment allows patients the setting that is needed only to focus on healing physically and psychologically (NEDA, n.d.). Anything the patient may need is found on site. When these stages have been achieved then either intensive outpatient or outpatient therapy is the next step. To begin this process the patient must be medically stable and no longer need monitoring. Politcal Power Political power can simply be defined as the power to influence. The power to influence is essentially the power to control. When pertaining to political matters, the most influential people in any form of government have the most power. The underlying argument is between who has the most influence. Is it the elite or the majority? There are four theories of who truly governs. The first theory is clearly elitist. Karl Marx has said that all government in any way shape or form is controlled by whichever class dominates the economy. In all societies there is an economic struggle between two major classes. Although the working class is the majority they have the least political power. This is solely because they have less money than the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie on the other hand dominate the working class economically simply because they own the factories where the working class work. The theory also represents the government as a machine designed to favor to the dominant classes interest. This is why a Marxist would believe that it is pointless to study a government because it has none of its own power. It runs on whoever feeds it, and in this case it is the bourgeoisie. The second theory is most similar to the first. It states that the nongovernmental elite has the most political power. This time when I mention elite it goes beyond the bourgeoisie. This elite is composed of corporate leaders, high ranking military officers, and a small group of political leaders. Other groups can be added, such as the leaders of the media, labor leaders and the heads of special interest groups. Many more groups can be added but the basic underlying idea of this theory is that a very small group of high status officials not involved in government contain the majority of political power. The third theory tends to sway from the first two theories. It states that political power is concentrated within some of the people who actually run the government, the bureaucrats. Because the bureaucrats are appointed officials it separates itself even farther apart from the other theories. The bureaucrats are only influenced by the people that appoint them. This is why the political power is contained within the government. The fourth and final theory can be described as a combination of the first three theories. It delves into the dominance of power between the elite themselves. The cheese slicer, invented by Thor Bjrklund of Norway The cheese slicer, or cheese plane, is an ingenious invention developed by a Norwegian cabinet maker, Thor Bjà ¸rklund. Using a principle similar to that of the carpenter’s plane found in his workshop, Bjà ¸rklund perfected a device for making very thin, uniform slices from the hard cheeses favored in Norway, such as gouda and jarlsberg. Thor Bjà ¸rklund Invents the First Cheese Slicer Bjà ¸rklund invented and patented the cheese plane in 1925. He founded the company Thor Bjà ¸rklund Sà ¸nner AS in Lillehammer two years later, which was Norway’s only producer of the traditional Norwegian cheese slicer (ostehà ¸vel), and the first in the world. Since then, the company has produced over 50 million cheese slicers. Originally, it took an hour to produce each cheese slicer, while today, approximately 7,000 slicers can be made in an hour. Other Cheese Slicing Inventions The cheese plane is not the only invention dedicated to cheese, however.  The cheese knife itself is designed to combat the issue of very soft cheeses. With a serrated blade, the cheese knife reduces the amount of soft cheese stuck to the blade. Most blades will also have holes to reduce the likelihood of cheese sticking to the knife.  The cheese cutter features a board with a wire on a cutting arm. The wire is of a fine gauge, again designed to cut through soft cheese without sticking. The action of the cheese wire is like that of a garotte.

State-funded faith schools This paper will look at the way in which state-funded faith schools came into being in the United Kingdom. It will argue that government educational policy and its immigration and integration policies play a key role in determining the need for the provision of state faith schools. The state funding of faith schools has a long history in the United Kingdom. The National Society of the Church of England founded 17,000 schools to offer education to the poor between 1811 and1860. (DfES, p.2) The state funding of these schools began in 1870 when Church and other voluntary institutions began to receive funds to supplement and assist them in their educational provision. (Cush, p.435) As at January 2008, of the 20,587 maintained primary and secondary schools in the UK, 6,827 have a religious character and of these nine are Muslim. (Bolton, 2009,Table 1) There are three types of schools with religious character in the UK maintained, academies and independent schools with the state providing funding for the first two. Maintained schools are either: voluntary controlled which means the Local Education Authority provides all the funding in return for control mostly over religious education and governance (most Church of England schools are voluntary controlled); and voluntary aided where the state provides 90% of the funding for more control over religious education and governance (most other denominations fall into this category, especially Roman Catholic schools). (Cush p. 435-436). Christian and Jewish faith schools were the only faith schools receiving state funding until 1998 when the Islamia Schools Trust, after a battle of 12 years, was awarded voluntary aide d status for its schools. Whilst there are only nine state funded Muslim schools, there are over 100 Muslim schools in Britain. These independent schools tend to co-ordinate their efforts through the Association of Muslim Schools. On November 11th, 2007 during Prime Ministers Questions, the government stated that regarding education it is committed to a diverse system of schools driven by parental needs and aspirations; that the Government does not have targets for faith schools but remains committed to supporting the establishment of new schools by a range of providers. (Bolton, 2009, p.14) Reaffirming the Governments position on faith schools, Ed Balls, the then Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families said on January 9th, 2008: It is not the policy of the Government or my Department to promote more faith schools. We have no policy to expand their numbers. That should be a matter for local communities. (Bolton, 2009, p.16) The drive for some members of the Muslim community towards their own faith schools needs to be understood in light of the backdrop of Muslim migration into the UK, their subsequent integration and recent world events. The first Muslims arriving from South Asia in the 1950s were semi-skilled or unskilled labourers. They had a tendency to stay insulated from the wider community this being as much a function of their own choice as a response to the racism and social exclusion they were experiencing. (Hefner, p.227) Subsequent open immigration policies of the 1970s allowed their families to follow and now 75% of all Muslims in the UK are from South Asia. According to the 2001 census, the approximately 1.6 million British Muslims make up roughly 3% of the population. (Hefner, p. 227) In the UK, Muslim has become synonymous with Pakistani. Third generation British-born Muslim families no longer think of themselves as immigrants, although what it means to be a British Muslim is still a concept being negotiated. Our identities are defined as much by our own understanding of our histories as by how we think others perceive us. In recent years, the identity of Muslims has been tied up with world events and striking representations in the media. Since September 11th, 2001, Muslims have been bombarded by an overwhelmingly hostile media and a government apparently intent on impinging on the liberties and human rights of its Muslim citizens. Salma Hafejee described an event that evoked not uncommon feelings in her 21 year old son. Speaking on a film for Our Lives, a project which explored the insights and experiences of Muslim women in Bradford, she told the story of a weekend visit her son took to Barcelona. Coincidently, on the weekend of his trip there had been a series of arrests made in Barcelona in connection with what h ad been described as terrorist activities. On his return home, her son was met by police and questioned for several hours. She said he had always felt British and believed that his British passport would protect him, but for the first time he felt an alien in his own home. (Speak-it, 2009) One can well imagine that this experience and the constant barrage of negative images relating to his faith in the media must have been bewildering. Naturally surrounded by such hostility and otherised in this way, a community would have a tendency to close ranks and look inward for comfort, protection and security. This situation can be seen as some justification for why the Muslim community turned to Muslim schools to preserve their communal identity and Muslim practices. The Education Reform Act 1988 states that schools should promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and in society Some Muslims were beginning to question whether a non-Muslim schooling environment would be able to adequately fulfil that need for their children. The Education Act of 1944 made religion the only subject it was compulsory to teach in school, but the teaching of religion is relatively superficial, meaning that from the perspective of those for whom a religious ethos is important, mainstream schools are unable to provide the spiritual and religious dimension adequately. How governments deal with the provision of religion does seem to have some bearing on the educational choices of parents. An examination of Belgium and The Netherlands shows that when the government provision of religious education is high, the demand for religious schools is muted. In Belgium, 4% of the population is Muslim primarily of Turkish or Moroccan descent. Since 1975, it has been the law to provide Islamic instruction in state schools on the same basis as other religions are taught. The first, and only, state funded Islamic primary school opened in 1989 and seems to be linked to the inability of two municipalities to appoint officially recognised teachers and thereby their refusal to provide Islamic instruction. In The Netherlands, 6% of the population is Muslim and also primarily of Turkish or Moroccan descent. The state does not have a policy for the specific provision of Islamic instruction and there are 45 Islamic schools in The Netherlands. (Merry, 2005) In the UK, the lack of adequate provision of religious education in mainstream state schools, the hostility of the media, the government and the public to their faith and community, and the recorded underachievement of Pakistanis in mainstream schools combine to form a powerful motivator for Muslim parents to take over control of the education of their child. Given the UK governments expansive rhetoric about promoting and supporting Britain to be a multi-cultural society, and its stated commitment to a diverse system of schools driven by parental needs and aspirations, the support of Muslim state funded schools is an easy stretch. But an agreed definition of a multicultural society seems woefully lacking. The government has a policy of promoting multiculturalism but if it is unable to define what a multicultural society could look like, how does it know that the policies it is promoting are effective to meeting this end? Todays multicultural Britain has many faces dependent largely on ethnicity, geography and social class, which in turn is one of the determinants of educational achievement. Is multicultural simply the acknowledgment of diversity in our society or is it an engagement with that diversity to create a society that is pluralistic? Does it mean that we are all free to live in our own sub-worlds without interface with the wider community or does it mean that we are encouraged to engage with each other? Where is the thread that binds us as citizens if we live entirely culturally independent lives? This was a question that was raised by Ray Honeyford more than twenty years ago and it is still a question that warrants addressing thoughtfully today. In 1982 Bradford Council issued guidelines for its aim in education. These included: preparing children for a life in a multicultural society; countering racism and the inequalities of discrimination; developing the strengths of cultural and linguistic diversity; and responding to the needs of minority groups. Ray Honeyford was a headteacher in a Bradford middle school and he was concerned that the educational policies he was expected to implement were unworkable. He argued that the 20% of Bradfords Islamic immigrant population had intentions to remain in Britain. For their sake and for the sake of others, they should participate fully in British life, and that in order to do so effectively their education needed to stress the primacy of the English language, and British culture, history and traditions. (Dalrymple, 2002) In 1984, Honeyford wrote an article that was rejected by The Times Educational Supplement before being published by the far right Salisbury Review. The fact that it was this publication that was the first method of transmission connoted a lot to its readers and no doubt would have influenced the subsequent interpretation of the article itself. In Education and Race an Alternative view Honeyford (2006) suggested that the perversion of language (he had a Masters in linguist ics) around race and cultural issues had made it impossible to speak honestly about the concerns and realities that our increasingly diverse society was throwing up. He highlighted that lumping together all non-whites into one category that was black created a dichotomy of anti-white solidarity. What we, today, call other-ing. His primary concern was the impact of an imposed multicultural mindset on the education of his students. British law obliges a parent to ensure that his or her child is registered and attends school regularly. He argued that the tendency for Asian families to take their children out of school and send them to the sub-continent for months at a time was not only illegal but had obvious negative educational effects. The Department of Education and Science turned a blind eye leaving headteachers, like Honeyford, to comply with an attendance policy based on the parents country of origin. He found this indefensible and cast it as an officially sanctioned policy of r acial discrimination. (Honeyford, 2006) Honeyford further highlighted that the absence of English as a primary language of instruction at the school left the ethnic white minority students in his schools educationally disadvantaged. His broader concern was how the functioning of inner cities with its production of ethnic ghettos, and multi-racial educational policies could produce an integrated and harmonious society. He concluded: I suspect that these elements, far from helping to produce harmony, are, in reality, operating to produce a sense of fragmentation and discord. And I am no longer convinced that the British genius for compromise, for muddling though, and for good natured tolerance will be sufficient to resolve the inevitable tensions. (Honeyford, 2006) Post-publication, Honeyford endured a protracted and bitter campaign against him leading to his eventual early retirement. The vitriolic response to his assertions for better and more integrative education did not raise the government action. Issues raised by the Honeyford Affair continue to be debated more than two decades later. Honeyfords tough and courageous questioning of issues that the government was too uncomfortable to raise and try and work through have left a lasting vacuum on integration and the harmonious and multicultural world we reasonably aspire to. In light of these affairs, the debate on faith schools which predominantly relates to maintained schools leads us first to ask what the aim and purpose of education is. Is education intended to provide us with skills for employment, in which case it is driven by a practical measurable output? Or is in intended for, as Aristotle called it, human flourishing? And are these two necessarily mutually exclusive? If education is deemed a human right, then what role does the child play in determining the education that he receives? These questions dont seem to have been directly touched upon by those debating the desirability of faith schools. Given the faith school debate touches on areas of education, politics and religion it is unlikely to be a dispassionate one. Most of the debate is opinion- rather than evidence-based (Cush p.440) and writers on the issue repeatedly bemoan the lack of empirical evidence to substantiate claims from either side. As Muslims are becoming acutely aware of their minority status, the drive towards Islamic schools is as much a response to the attack on their identity as it is about the ethos of education. According to Heffner and Zaman (2007, p. 228) In recent years, the issue of Islamic education has been a vital part of the debate about what it means to be a British Muslim today and an important terrain in the negotiation of identity, citizenship and co-existence. Mainstream education tends to view the world though an Anglo-Saxon lens and achievements are Europeanised. The study of the contributions made by Muslim scholars over the centuries in many subject areas is a boost to self-esteem and those calling for Muslim schools are looking for a change in the way the world is viewed. The mission statement of the Islamia Trust Schools states that it strive[s] to provide the best education in a secure Islamic environment through the knowledge and application of the Quran and Sunnah. (Islamia) What this requires is a reconception of the way in which any subject can be taught, negotiating as it must through the Quran and the Sunnah. The argument being made is that Muslim children are becoming de-Islamised (Khan-Cheema, p.83) and that mainstream schools are failing to provide an ethos in which all, not just secular, aspects of a childs life are catered for. Concern for the lack of single sex provision in the mainstream for girls is also voiced as a co ncern and a reason for requiring the provision of Muslim schools. The academic underachievement of Pakistanis in mainstream schools is well recognised, but their achievement in faith schools is well above average (Bolton, 2009). The direct connection linking improved academic results and faith schools should be made cautiously as academic achievement is also liked to the economic and social class of the family. The case against Muslim faith schools is a compelling one. Those fighting this position say that these schools are a breeding ground for fundamentalist and intolerant religious views that are not inclusive of the majority. They propagate segregation and voluntary apartheid and create ghettos which exclude other races and faiths, thus creating social division. With Islam almost universally cast as a threat to world order this raises questions relating to citizenship and loyalty. Those in this camp may draw some of their inspiration from the position Honeyford took on the need to integrate rather than segregate more than 2 decades ago. Why would, and how could, an immigrant who lands in the UK who is able to create for himself an environment that reflects culturally, socially, and educationally the one which he left, have any opportunity to build loyalty to his host country. Clearly the governments position on what a multicultural Britain would look like needs to be debated much more openly if only so we can try and understand how we will get there. A laissez-faire each-to-his own policy cannot surely provide the way forward. In so adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hurt us depending on how we react to it. The circumstances that cause stress are called stressors. Stressors vary in harshness and duration. For example, the responsibility of caring for a sick parent may be an ongoing source of major stress, whereas getting stuck in a traffic jam may cause mild, short-term stress. Some events, such as the death of a loved one, are stressful for everyone. But in other situations, individuals may respond differently to the same event—what a stressor is for one person may not be stressor for another. It is said that the majority of high school students have witnessed illegal drugs being used in their schools, illegal drugs being sold, illegal drugs in the possession of students, students high on drugs and students that are drunk. Parents think that until they get rid the schools of drugs, students will not bring good grades and achieve high marks. In schools in Newfoundland and Labrador, drugs are a huge issue. Smoking weed has become as regular as smoking a cigarette. The youth are even selling marijuana amongst themselves. All kinds of drugs are being used such as crystal meth, pot and ecstasy. In America, 60% of high school students and 30% or middle school students returned to school this year where illegal drugs are used, kept and sold. Many reports found that drug abuse will increase and will add $41 billion to the cost of elementary and secondary education this year for class disruption and violence, special education and tutoring. Parents say that drugs have infested schools and threatened students and their ability to learn and develop their talents. If parents would feel strongly about drugs in schools, we would have drug-free schools. It seems that more and more high school students are using drugs every year. Mostly, 10.5% of the youth that come for treatment are kids who started using drugs before the age of eleven. The media says that it is the parents, school board and the authorities to be held responsible for this because they never asked for drug-free schools.
